Listening?

How many of us are truly listening to what others are saying? Active listening is really hard for some people, they are formulating their response in their minds while the other person is speaking, usually ending up saying the exact same thing!

What is active listening? It is a technique that coaches and counselors use, which requires the listener to fully concentrate, understand, respond, and then remember what is being said. This is opposed to other listening techniques like reflective listening and empathic listening. Important words there...to fully concentrate which we know can be tricky for many. Listening is one of the amazing gifts we have. How well we listen will impact our relationships with others, so why don’t we listen better?

We can all become better listeners. Make a conscious effort to hear not only the words that the other person is saying but the complete message being communicated. To do this you must pay attention to the other person very carefully. Let the person know that you ARE listening, could be with a gentle nod of your head. When it is your turn to speak, acknowledge what they have said, do not judge, and respond appropriately! People want to know they have been heard, you may not agree with what they have said, that is okay you are allowed to have differing opinions.

As a Coach I practice active listening, I truly listen to what you have to say, with no judgment. I know you want to be heard and I am here to listen.

Love & Blessings Always,

Nicky Clarke
